Currency and Money Tips for Sri Lanka

The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Cards are common at hotels, larger restaurants and supermarkets, but cash remains useful for small shops, local meals, market purchases, tickets and tips.

01

Getting local currency

Exchange a sensible amount at an authorised bank or exchange counter, or withdraw rupees from a bank ATM. Compare the displayed rate and fees before accepting a transaction.

02

Cash and card balance

Keep enough cash for rural stops and small vendors, while using a card for larger purchases where accepted. Carry two payment methods separately so a lost wallet or declined card does not interrupt the trip.

03

ATM and card safety

  • Choose ATMs attached to banks or in well-lit locations
  • Cover the keypad and do not accept help from strangers
  • Tell your bank about international travel if required
  • Review the amount and currency before confirming a card payment
04

Tipping and small expenses

Tipping is appreciated for helpful service but should feel voluntary. Smaller notes are convenient for drivers, guides, hotel staff, parking, snacks and short local stops.

Keep a small daily wallet

Carry only what you expect to spend that day and store your backup card and extra cash securely at your accommodation.
